![]() In the summer time, they do provide some economical space cooling if that is a benefit, but in summer the solar water heating will excel at free and cheap heating of your water. If you over-night low stays above -10C you would probably not run into this failure.Īlso note when people are talking about air-source heat pumps, if they are located inside in a space you are heating with solar any way, they are really no more efficient that resistive heating systems, since they are just pumping heat out of your conditioned space into your water heater so you've already paid to heat the space, now you are paying to pump that heat into the water. Some of the European heat pipes had a working fluid with a much lower freeze point and were not susceptible to the problem (not sure if it was a glycol or just alcohol base?) Other than disassembly of the system, it is fairly difficult to diagnose the failure but it happened on mass scales for systems installed in my area. An evacuated tube solar hot water system is made up of heat pipes surrounded by two glass tubes, an inner tube and an outer tube. After a few of these freeze events (and it would pretty much thaw every day and freeze every night that dropped that cold) the heat pipe would eventually rupture and the fluid would escape. This solar water heater uses 1800 x 58mm high-quality evacuated tubes with tri-coating technology. The freezing would cause the water to expand, and it would in turn expand the copper at the bottom of the heat pipe. Evacuated Tube Collectors collect the heat through a number of annealed glass tubes that each have their own heat-absorbing plate inside. ![]() Many of these Chineese systems the fluid was just water, and in our climate (canadian prairies) this water could freeze inside the evacuated tube on a really cold day (-20C or bellow). The heat pipe is basically a copper pipe sealed with a small amount of fluid in at a low pressure, allowing the fluid to evaporate at a low temperature. Many of the systems coming out of china have a heat pipe inside the evacuated tube. One word of caution depending on your location. ![]() I haven't seen much activity in North America regarding the tubes. ![]()
